I used an old denim jacket I already owned and unraveled the parts I wanted to dye in different colours. After doing so, I put the parts to be coloured in yellow and red aside and bleached them. The parts to be dyed in black were dyed directly. I used different commercial dyes to understand how they work and realized how toxic they were from the first use (dyed my hands). For the back of the jacket, I made a gradient of yellow to red. Then I sew the jacket back together.
Making this project made me realize how dying processes are toxic. The use of bleach, the polluting ingredients in the dyes and the unethical way they are produced made me want to know more about natural dyes for the planet's and the operator's safety. One of my next projects would be to use dyes produced by "Pili", a start-up located in the same incubator as the start-up I currently work in. They produce dyes in biofermentors thanks to metabolically engineered bacteria.
